a-viennese-prom-may-2015Travel back in time to the glory days of 19th century Vienna with a magical mix of music and song. A Vienna awash with opulent parties and glittering ballrooms filled with dancers whirling deliriously, revelling in a new phenomenon called the waltz. While Josef Lanner transformed the peasant dance, the Strauss family soon captured a monopoly on both waltz and polka, feeding the insatiable demand of Vienna’s enthusiasm.

Combining the elegance of Vienna with the rousing sound of the Irish Chamber Orchestra, eminent German conductor, Jochen Rieder takes the baton for this sumptuous extravaganza. Rieder regularly conducts the great Jonas Kaufmann, so his appearance in Limerick’s Milk Market is much anticipated. The ICO will be joined by sparkling soprano Gloria Rehm for a delectable mix of Viennese waltzes, polkas and song which are as fresh today as they were then.

Waltzes will feature dancers from Ballet Ireland in glorious costumes of the period. From The Blue Danube to Tales from the Vienna Woods to Die Fledermaus, there is something here for everyone!

The Irish Chamber Orchestra is Ireland’s finest chamber orchestra, renowned nationally and internationally for its energy, unique sound, diversity and outstanding musicianship. Working with Gábor Takács Nagy (Principal Artistic Partner) and Jörg Widmann (Principal Guest Conductor/Artistic Partner), the Irish Chamber Orchestra is breaking boundaries and opening new doors to music worldwide.

The Irish Chamber Orchestra is resident at the Irish World Academy of Music and Dance at the University of Limerick and is funded by the Arts Council of Ireland/An Chomhairle Ealaíon.
