The Good Wood Toy Company is the Limerick branch of a business that first came into being as Wild Wood Toys in Waterford, when a member of the Murphy family went looking for sturdy and stimulating toys to capture the attention of a child with autism. After investigation a wide range of toys easily available in Germany was found, but similar products were difficult to track down in Ireland. Recognising that such toys would be appreciated here, the Murphy’s first brought in a few items to try out at a local market in Waterford - the reaction was very positive, and Wild Wood Toys continues to sell wooden toys from all over Europe at the Jenkins Lane Market in Waterford.

The people of Limerick have also responded very positively to these beautiful toys and The Good Wood Toy Company now sells at the Limerick Milk Market as well as various festivals in the Munster region during the Summer and at Christmas.

Running a business that operates mainly at weekends has suited Leah very well in the past couple of years as during the week she is completing a BA in Music and Psychology at Mary Immaculate College - she graduates this year but hopes to continue on to do a Masters in Psychology.

The toys are currently sourced in Germany but Leah hopes this year to also bring in stock from the Czech Republic and Russia. All the toys are CE-tested and safe for children - all paints are non-toxic and the wood is sourced from reforested trees. The beauty of wooden toys is their durability - they are easily repaired with a spot of wood glue if necessary and last for years. Leah is delighted to report that she frequently has customers report back to tell her that the bus, train or spinning top they bought from Good Wood Toys has become a firm favourite and is constantly played with. Leah likes to think that in decades to come the same toys will be discovered at the back of a wardrobe or in the attic by the next generation and get a new lease of life!
