Milk Market Limerick to re-open as all-weather venue on June 19th
New facilities and new events, new traders and a new website herald an exciting new chapter for this historical venue
Limerick, June 11th, 2010 --- The Limerick Market Trustees announced today, that Milk Market Limerick will re-open on Saturday, June 19th. This follows the completion of a €2m re-development programme, which has transformed it into an all-weather venue with four new shops, has made power and water available at all stall positions and introduced a new mezzanine seating area overlooking the market’s main courtyard. “This means that Milk Market Limerick, which was established in 1852 and is amongst the oldest markets in the country, now has the most up-to-date facilities of any market in the land. These upgraded facilities have already attracted new, award-winning food producers to establish a full-time presence there. They have also enabled the roll-out of an extended programme of markets and events at the Milk Market and spurred on the launch of a comprehensive new website (www.MilkMarketLimerick.ie;) significant developments, which together pave the way for Milk Market Limerick to become the leading market venue in Ireland,” commented David O’Mahony, Chairman, Limerick Market Trustees.

Nenagh-based Country Choice Delicatessen and Ponaire Coffee from Annacotty are two high profile, award-winning newcomers from the Region who will start operating full-time, retail outlets at the Milk Market when it re-opens on June 19th. Limerick firms and long-standing Milk Market traders, award-winning Sallymills Artisan Cakes & Desserts and the popular Fleur de Sel Crêperie will expand their respective operations at the Milk Market and occupy the two remaining new retail units there. Adding to the already long list of Milk Market Traders, Knockara Patés, Quarrymount Free Range Meats and Spanish Point Sea Vegetables will also make their debut in the new schedule of markets and events there. This level of commitment by such high calibre food firms serves as a huge vote of confidence in the new Milk Market, particularly during the current economic climate.
The increase in traders will be coupled by a threefold increase in weekly market events when the Milk Market re-opens. There will be a new “City Market” on Fridays from 11am to 7pm, offering fresh flowers, fine foods, crafts and bites-to-go. The much-loved Saturday “Famous Food Market” will return to base with extended opening hours from 8am to 4pm each week. The “Riverside Variety Market” (formerly the Bedford Row Market) will showcase a wide range of arts and crafts, fine antiques and food-to-go at the Milk Market every Sunday from 11am until 4pm and a brand new “Flower and Garden Market” will take place on Bank Holiday Mondays from 11am to 4pm. The venue will also be promoted for other complementary, mid-week markets and events such as antique and fashion shows, classical concerts and pet shows.

About Limerick Market Trustees
The Limerick Market Trustees was established in 1852 “to expand and manage the affairs of markets within the boundary of Limerick City and one mile beyond...” While still upholding this brief, nowadays the Trustees have direct responsibility for the running of two markets in Limerick; The Milk Market and The Riverside Market, a Sunday, Summer market, which formerly operated at Bedford Row in the City, but will re-locate to the Milk Market after it re-opens. Both markets were awarded the “Certificate of Good Practice Standard for Farmers’ Markets” by the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food in conjunction with Bord Bia in 2009. Contrary to its name, the Milk Market (www.MilkMarketLimerick.ie), which is one of the longest-operating markets in Ireland, does not specialise in the sale of milk. Instead, it provides a state-of-the-art venue to showcase a wide range of premier produce from the land and sea, provided by some 60, high calibre traders from the Region and beyond. The Milk Market received a European Heritage Award in 1995. A not-for-profit organisation, the board of the trustees is made up of members of Limerick City Council, Limerick County Council and Limerick Chamber, who are re-elected annually.
